We love microgreens! They come in so many colors and flavors, perfect for creating a unique spin on your favorite meals. Asian microgreen varieties are no exception. We know it can be intimidating to try something new, especially if you aren’t sure what it will taste like. To give you an idea of the different Asian microgreens available, we have created this Flavor Guide to give you a preview of what these microgreens have to offer.
Radish
Radish microgreens are known for their peppery flavor which varies in intensity by variety. The spice is comparable to a nice horseradish flavor. These are ideal for spicing up a salad, sandwich, sushi, stir-fry, or soup.
- Green Stem - Classic daikon radish flavor yellow, very mellow on the spice. Popularly used for sushi rolls.
- Giant Luo Buo - Classic succulent radish flavor.
- Sango Purple - Fresh, nutty, spicy.
- Triton Purple - Somewhat mild peppery flavor, similar to arugula or lettuce, with a light bite to it. Has a melt-in-your-mouth texture.
- Daikon minowase - Fresh and spicy, just like a mature radish.
- China Rose - Intense radish flavor.
- Spicy Brown Oriental - A rather sharp flavor that brings a great zing to sandwiches and salads.
- Tsa Tsai Round - Spicy, oriental flavors.
- Small Gai Choi - Strong Brassica flavor yet fresh and verdent.
- Shuidong - Full notes of Broccoli and Cabbage with underlying spice.
- Mizuna Lime Streaks - Zesty, tangy, and mildly peppered similar to arugula.
Mustard
Mustard microgreens have a distinguished sharp flavor. These varieties range in complexity as they share hints of other common brassica flavors. Generally microgreens should be used fresh to harvest their dense nutrient contents. Cooking at high heats can reduce their nutrient value.
Cabbage
Cabbage microgreens are known for their mild flavors. These are great for adding to any dish to boost the nutritional value. Because of their mild flavor kids are often more welcoming of these leafy greens.
- Pak Choi - Rosette Tatsoi - slightly sweeter than other pak choi microgreens.
- Pak Choi - Shanghai - Full of grown pak choi flavor.
- Pak choi - Extra Dwarf - Fresh and clean tasting with a slight cabbage flavor.
- Hiroshimana - A slightly floral hint to an otherwise brassica-flavored microgreen.
- Matsushima No. 2 - Very fresh, flavorful, and juicy delicious cabbage-like but unique.
- Kogane - A succulent cabbage flavor.
- Kyoto No. 3 - A full brassica flavor (broccoli-like).
- Beka Santoh - A very mild brassica flavor.
- Big Stem - Fresh, delicious, spring-like.
- Kailaan - Classic kale and broccoli flavor yet not as pungent as many broccoli varieties.
- Standard Broccoli Microgreens - Fresh, mild broccoli or cabbage flavor.
Chinese Broccoli
Standard microgreen broccoli provides a mild brassica flavor much like cabbage. This make it an ideal microgreen to keep stocked up on and use whenever you can add it to your everyday meals. Chinese Broccoli varieties also shares this mild flavor but with even milder tones.
